IBM Rational PurifyPlus Family

The products in IBM Rational PurifyPlus are: IBM Rational Purify, IBM Rational Quantify, and IBM Rational PureCoverage. Highlights of the current release include:

Full support and integration of PurifyPlus in Visual Studio .NET

IBM Rational PurifyPlus, IBM Rational Purify, IBM Rational Quantify and IBM Rational PureCoverage now all have support for managed code (including VB.NET and C#) and unmanaged code (Visual C/C++ and VB). PurifyPlus is seamlessly integrated in the Visual Studio .NET IDE, allowing users to collect runtime data and analyze memory usage, profile performance, and monitor code coverage from Visual Studio .NET. With PurifyPlus, you get the best in runtime error detection and memory profiling, the most powerful tool for identifying and analyzing performance bottlenecks, as well as automatic identification of all untested code for Microsoft .NET and Visual Studio applications.

Selective instrumentation for native applications

PurifyPlus now supports selective instrumentation for Java and .NET managed code. This powerful new facility allows users to easily select the classes they wish to instrument. By default, all classes are instrumented with the exception of a set of domain-specific classes that are typically not of interest. It is also possible to explicitly select a set of classes to instrument and exclude everything else.

PurifyPlus now supports Sun's SDK 1.4

The enhanced Java support new in PurifyPlus gives developers support for the very latest Standard Development Kit (SDK) from Sun.

ASP.NET Profiling Agent technology preview

ASP.NET Profiler is a technology preview module that lets users analyze .NET Web services without the tedious workarounds of setting up environmental variables and restarting the computer. After starting the Agent, users right-click the icon in the system tray and select one of the suggested options: Purify, Quantify, PureCoverage or None. The first three options attach the PurifyPlus tool to the running ASP.NET process and start collecting memory profiling data, performance profiling data, or code coverage.

IBM Rational Purify

IBM Rational Purify now includes support for class filtering in both Java and .NET managed applications. You can now open the Class Instrumentation dialog box to include or exclude classes during data collection. You can also filter classes to exclude and precisely control data collection.

IBM Rational Purify now supports:

The problem that prevented Purify from running inside the Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 IDE after certain Windows 2000 upgrades (including SP3) has been resolved.

IBM Rational Quantify

IBM Rational Quantify now includes support for class filtering in both Java and .NET managed applications. You can now open the Class Instrumentation dialog box to include or exclude classes during data collection. You can also filter classes to exclude and precisely control data collection.

IBM Rational Quantify now supports:

The problem that prevented Quantify from running inside the Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 IDE after certain Windows 2000 upgrades (including SP3) has been resolved.

IBM Rational PureCoverage

The code coverage merge facility has been enhanced to allow finer control over the displayed merge results. If the ActiveMerge checkbox in the Preferences dialog box is selected, Auto Merge datasets in the PureCoverage Navigator include a Layer subentry for each run that contributes to the merge. Users can then select and deselect these layers in any combination to easily determine how much each of the associated runs contributed to the merge results. In the annotated source window for merged runs, if a line is selected, the check box for each merge layer is color coded to reflect whether the associated test included the given line. When viewing the function list, if a function is selected, the checkboxes for each merge layer will be colored to indicate whether the associated test included the given function.

Command-line support for merging has been added. A user can merge multiple coverage data files using either of the following command lines:

coverage /MergeFileList=<filename1; filename2; filename3> /SaveMergeData=<merge-filename> /IncludeContribData=TRUE (default is FALSE)

In this case, the file list is directly supplied on the command-line by means of the /MergeFileList option. The files specified in filename2, filename3, and so on are merged into filename1. The results are stored in the merge-filename specified in the /SaveMergeData option. To save the data as text /SaveMergeTextData may be used instead of /SaveMergeData.

coverage /MergeMaster=<filename> /SaveMergeData=<merge-filename> /IncludeContribData=TRUE (default is FALSE)

In this case, the user specifies the merge files using a merge master file. The merge master file defines the merge contributors and has a simple format with one file per line separated by a carriage return/line feed pair. To save data as text /SaveMergeTextData may be used instead of /SaveMergeData. In both cases, if no merge-filename is specified, the default name used for the generated merge file is PUTName_UserMerge.cfy or PUTName_UserMerge.txt, depending on whether a binary or text file is requested. Also, the resulting merge could have either the details of all the contributing datasets stored in it or just the merge results. If the /IncludeContribData option is set, details regarding individual contributions to the merge are saved, enabling subsequent use of ActiveMerge within the user interface. If the option is not set (which is the default), details regarding individual contributions are not saved and the resulting file data will appear to come from a single run.

IBM Rational PureCoverage now includes support for class filtering in both Java and .NET managed applications. You can now open the Class Instrumentation dialog box to include or exclude classes during data collection.  You can also filter classes to exclude and precisely control data collection.

IBM Rational PureCoverage now supports:

The problem that prevented PureCoverage from running inside the Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 IDE after certain Windows 2000 upgrades (including SP3) has been resolved.

For more information about what is new in IBM Rational PurifyPlus, Purify, PureCoverage, and Quantify, see the release notes for those products.

Compatibility issues

This section identifies special considerations for using IBM Rational Suite with other products, including IBM Rational products and third-party software products.

With IBM Rational Products

For more detailed information about compatibility issues among IBM Rational products, go to the release notes for the specific IBM Rational products of interest to you.

Selecting an IDE during product installation

If you are installing IBM Rational XDE, IBM Rational PurifyPlus, or a Suite product containing IBM Rational PurifyPlus, the IBM Rational Setup wizard will prompt you to select the IDE in which you want the product to run. The selectable list of IDEs is dependent on your system's IDE.

IBM Rational E-Mail Reader (mailreader.exe)

Because of an install directory change after IBM Rational E-Mail Reader version 2002.05.20, if you install RequisitePro as a point product, the complete IBM Rational E-Mail Reader files are not installed. If you attempt to open mailreader.exe, an error message states that expected .dll files are not present. In order to resolve this issue, install IBM Rational ClearQuest 2003.06.00 or later on your system. IBM Rational ClearQuest 2003.06.00 or later may be installed separately or as part of an IBM Rational Suite product. No license is required for ClearQuest. (RATLC00694844).

Installing IBM Rational Suite Enterprise with IBM Rational Test RealTime

If you have installed an earlier version of IBM Rational Test RealTime on the same system with IBM Rational Suite, upgrade IBM Rational Test RealTime to version 2002.05. Earlier versions of IBM Rational Test RealTime will fail after installation of IBM Rational Suite version 2002.05. Upgrades are free to all IBM Rational customers with a current maintenance contract. Please contact your IBM Rational sales representative for additional information.

Performance issues and source control operations for medium-to-large projects

When you add test and requirements assets to source control or perform a Checkin All operation, system performance can be very slow for medium-to-large requirements and test projects.

IBM Rational Suite 2002 lets you place requirements and test assets under version control in an IBM Rational ClearCase VOB. This support uses two operations from the IBM Rational Administrator: Add to CM and Checkin All. Add to CM adds the assets to source control and Checkin All captures a snapshot of the assets. In both cases, if you have a large number of requirements or test assets, these operations may take a long time and could make these features unusable, depending on how often you perform these operations.

The time it takes to perform these operations directly depends on the number of files required to store the requirements and test assets. For requirements assets, the number of required files is independent of the number of saved views, requirement types, and documents. The number of files is not dependent on the number of requirements. For test assets, the number of files needed mostly depends on the number of scripts and the number of verification points in each script being managed.

Use the following information to estimate the time it will take for the Add to CM and Checkin All operations for existing requirements and test projects. Because there is a strong relationship between the performance of these operations and the number of file elements placed under source control, start by determining the number of file elements that will be involved in the operation.

Requirements Assets

To estimate the number of files added to source control or checkpointed for an IBM Rational RequisitePro project, use the following formula:

Number of Files = 10 + 3 * (number of documents) + (number of saved views) + (number of Requirement Types)
Estimated Operation Time in Minutes: 10 * number of files) / 60 seconds

Example:

Number of documents = 165
Number of saved views = 37
Number of Requirement Types = 12

The time required to add a RequisitePro project to source control is proportional to the number of requirement types, documents, and saved views in the project. Adding the above example (554 files) to source control initially took:

Additional tips for Rational RequisitePro

If you use IBM Rational ClearCase LT to baseline your IBM Rational RequisitePro project, here are some tips to improve performance of Checkin All operation:

Test assets

To estimate the number of files added to source control or checkpointed for a Test project, use the following formula:

Number of GUI script files = (number of GUI scripts) * (2 + OP + (2 * OD))

Where:

OP = Average number of object property verification points + average number of low level scripts + average number of alphanumeric verification points

OD = Average number of object data verification points

Number of files = 200 + number of GUI script files + number of manual scripts

Estimated operation time in minutes:

(10 * number of files) / 60 seconds

Example:

Number of GUI scripts = 200
Estimated 3 object or alphanumeric verification point and/or low-level scripts
Estimated 1 data verification point
Number of manual scripts = 100
Number of GUI script files = 200 * (2 + 3 + (2 * 1)) = 1400

The 10x factor in computing the time is based on an estimated five seconds for two ClearCase operations that must be performed on each file in this implementation. You may be able to improve performance of these operations with a high-powered and correctly configured ClearCase server.

ClearQuest Data Code Pages: Character Set Compatibility with ClearQuest

You may see an error message about data code pages if your IBM Rational project is integrated with ClearQuest. For more information, see the "IBM Rational ClearQuest Documentation Supplement."

UCM on Windows NT with ClearCase 5.0

A possible problem has been identified in cases in which ClearCase 5.0 is installed on Windows NT 4.0. After you use the IBM Rational Administrator to perform a UCM datastore operation (such as create a datastore, Checkin All, add to or remove from source control), shut down and restart the IBM Rational Administrator before performing another such operation.

Microsoft Windows 2000 NTFS "Change Journal" defect can cause file system corruption during installation of IBM Rational products

Under certain circumstances, file system corruption can result from installing IBM Rational Version 2003 products on Windows 2000 to an NTFS partition that has enabled the Windows "Change Journal" (log). This corruption is caused by a defect in Windows 2000. Before you install any IBM Rational Version 2003 product on a computer that is running Windows 2000:

  1. Disable all virus detection software.
  2. Read IBM Support Technote 1135295. Go to http://www-1.ibm.com/support/us/search/index.html and search for "Rational Installer Change Journal."
  3. Read Microsoft Knowledge Base article 820888 at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];820888. This article includes information about an update from Microsoft that fixes the defect.

Windows XP Service Pack 2

Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) Security Measures

Note: The production release of Windows XP SP2 was not available for final testing at the time this document was finalized. To obtain the latest information about Windows XP SP2 support, go to IBM Rational Support at http://www.ibm.com/software/rational/support/ and search for “Rational products and Windows XP SP2. The following information is based on testing done with Windows XP SP2 Release Candidate 2, released June 14, 2004.

Microsoft Windows XP SP2 includes security measures that may affect IBM Rational products as follows:

You may receive warnings when using online or extended help from IBM Rational products affected by this issue:

Online Help and Rational product HTML files on the hard disk of the local machine
When using online help for one of these applications, or accessing Rational product HTML files on the hard disk of the local machine, a warning dialog might open informing you that the page has been restricted from running active content that might be able to access your computer. When you are prompted to do so, choose to allow the page to access your computer.

Note: The warning dialog opens the first time you select HTML active content on the local disk. The dialog notifies you about the new Information bar (in Internet Explorer, beneath the Address box). By default, "Do not show this message again" is selected, and this warning dialog will not be displayed again. Read the content in the Information bar and click anywhere in the bar to select the option that enables active content. Online help should now display.

Rational Unified Process and Extended Help
When using Rational Unified Process or Extended Help from one of these applications, a warning dialog might open informing you that the page has been restricted from running active content that might be able to access your computer. When you are prompted to do so, choose to allow the page to access your computer.

Note: If the correct Java JRE is not installed on your computer, another warning dialog might open, displaying the following message: “JRE required by RUP and Extended Help not found." If you are operating on Windows XP SP2, this dialog might not open. Still, the correct Java JRE must be installed on your computer for Rational Unified Process and Extended Help to display. For more information about this and any other warnings that may be displayed when using online or extended help from IBM Rational products, go to IBM Rational Support at http://www.ibm.com/software/rational/support/ and search for "Rational products and JRE with Windows XP SP2."

Firewall Issues

Windows XP SP2 enables a firewall that might make it difficult for the IBM Rational product client and/or server to operate. You might receive warnings about network connections when using the following IBM Rational client applications:

You might receive warnings about network connections when using the following IBM Rational server applications installed on Windows XP SP2:

Allowing network traffic when using Windows XP SP2
If you are using one of the IBM Rational applications that are affected by XP SP2, while making outgoing requests, a warning dialog might open to inform you that an outgoing request is being made. If the firewall blocks network traffic, then client/server applications will not operate. To ensure that IBM Rational products operate with Windows XP SP2, you must allow network traffic by doing one of the following:

IBM Rational License Server (FLEXlm-based) and Windows XP Service Pack 2
Communication ports on Windows XP SP2 are closed by default. For a License Server installed on Windows XP SP2 to be able to serve licenses to clients other than itself, it needs two open ports, one each for rational.exe and lmgrd.exe.

To open the firewall for the IBM Rational License Server (FLEXlm-based) on Windows XP SP2 machines, go to the Rational/common directory and double-click WinXPSP2.reg. This file will import the changes to the registry and open up the firewall for rational.exe and lmgrd.exe to use any ports.

Note: If you did not use the default path (C:\Program Files\Rational\Common\) to install the Rational License Server, you must edit the WinXPSP2.reg file by replacing the C:\Program Files\Rational\Common in two locations in each line with the actual install path. Optionally, you can open the firewall for the IBM Rational License Server (FLEXlm-based) manually by following these instructions:

  1. Click Control Panel > Internet Connection Firewall > Exceptions Tab.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Select a program radio button.
  4. Browse to rational.exe (typically located at C:\Program Files\Rational\Common).
  5. Add a Description, click OK, and click OK again until you return to the Internet Connection Firewall window.
  6. Repeat the previous steps to add lmgrd.exe (C:\Program Files\rational\common\) to the Exceptions tab.
    Note
: Make sure that the two items added in Steps 5 and 6 are selected in the Programs and Services box in the Internet Connection firewall window.
  7. Click OK. You might need to restart your computer.

IBM Rational ClearCase Client or Server with MVFS and Windows XP Service Pack 2
In order for ClearCase V2002.05 to operate on Windows XP SP2, the latest V2002.05 patch must be installed.

In order for ClearCase V2003.06 to operate on Windows XP SP2, V2003.06.13 must be installed.

Note: For more information about ClearCase release, patch, and service release versions, go to IBM Rational Software Support at http://www.ibm.com/software/rational/support/, or see the "IBM Rational ClearCase Release Notes."

IBM Rational ClearCase Server including Client with local view and Windows XP Service Pack 2
In order for ClearCase V2002.05 to operate on Windows XP SP2, the latest V2002.05 patch must be installed.

In order for ClearCase V2003.06 to operate on Windows XP SP2, V2003.06.13 must be installed, otherwise, the dynamic views will not be accessible remotely even after registering ClearCase servers with the firewall. Also, the VOBs will not be accessible by UNIX clients. In certain cases, the earlier versions of ClearCase clients may not be able to access the VOBs.

Note: For more information about ClearCase release, patch, and service release versions, go to IBM Rational Software Support at http://www.ibm.com/software/rational/support/, or see the "IBM Rational ClearCase Release Notes."

You must register all ClearCase server processes (those from the albd_server and those listed in %CLEARCASEHOME%\config\services\albd.conf) with the firewall by using the Windows Firewall Control panel or netsh firewall add allowedprogram command. See the IBM Rational ClearCase Release Notes for sample batch scripts to register and unregister processes in all scopes and profiles.

IBM Rational TestManager, Robot, and Test Agent and Windows XP Service Pack 2
The following programs attempt to communicate through the firewall and may cause a firewall pop-up window requesting whether their communication should be allowed through. These programs should be unblocked as a response to this dialog and from then on will be allowed through the Microsoft firewall. The known programs include: rtprvu.exe, rtpsvc.exe, rtprvd.exe, rtasrv.exe, rtpsrv.exe, rtmanager.exe, rtrobo.exe, and rtstsee.exe.

Install RATLC00008162/ No APAR Users should not install their software to a network location under Windows 9.x. Sometimes the installation needs to restart in order to install files that have been locked by the OS during installation. Restarting the installation frees these files so that they can be replaced before they become locked again. Installing to a network location causes problems because the network connections are not ready when this replacement happens. As a result, the OS cannot replace the files and the old files remain. This will cause problems with the installed image.

You must install Rational Suite from an account that has administrator privileges. If you attempt to install from an account that does not have administrator privileges, you may be prompted with an operating system dialog that suggests you can install regardless of this by entering the userid and password of another account that does have administrator privileges.
Entering alternate account information in this manner does not seem to be effective. If you attempt to install, you may still get fatal errors that are caused by insufficient privileges.
IBM recommends that you always log in to an account that has administrator privileges.

Product RATLC ID/APAR Description
Install RATLC00243823/ No APAR Sometimes, an IBM Rational product is not updated when a service release is installed. For more information, see the "IBM Rational Suite Upgrade Guide."
Install RATLC00702104/ No APAR After installing one or more IBM Rational products, stray "msiexec" processes linger in memory. Users must restart their systems before applying the service release, even if product installation does not require this.
Install RATLC00698818/ No APAR Corrects a defect that causes the About box to not display the version of the product if multiple products are installed and the version of one of them does not match the others. For example, if  different versions of IBM Rational products exist on a user's system and the user selects Help > About ... , UNKNOWN is displayed in the version field instead of a version number. The service release fixes this issue so that a version number is displayed, even if the user does not have the same version of different IBM Rational products on their machine.
Install RATLC00240650/ No APAR An error message appears when doing Rose Data Modeler Site Preparation.

Workaround: If you are creating an enterprise deployment (release area) and the "Launch installation using these settings" checkbox is selected, some Windows 2000 users may see the product installation start before the release area has been created, because the product installation task didn't wait for the release area task to finish.

If this happens, cancel the installation, then run these two tasks separately:

  1. Run the installer to do an enterprise deployment and create a release area. Clear the "launch" checkbox. Let the process run to completion.
  2. Once the release area is created successfully, do a SitePrep install from that release area.
Install RATLC00449702/ No APAR Attempting to run a newly created SQL Anywhere network service after installation may give the following error:
"A database server with that name has already started." The service then fails to start. If this issue is encountered, do the following:
  1. In Sybase Central, right-click the service name and choose Properties.
  2. In the Configuration tab, change the specified server name using the "-n" parameter to a different name.
  3. Click Apply and OK to close the dialog.
  4. Right-click the service name and select Start to start the service.
Install RATLC00695603/ No APAR There are two licensing pages displayed in SitePrep:
  • One within ClearCase pages (License Server - expected)
  • One within IBM Rational Licensing Page (IBM Rational License Server).

Ignore the FlexLM licensing page in SitePrep and custom install.

Install RATLC00698094/ No APAR The original source must be available when patching or modifying an installation, otherwise a network share needs to be available containing the file.
Install RATLC00447664/ No APAR Dual processors cause permission error 1304 under v2003.06 install. For details on a workaround, see the "IBM Rational Suite Upgrade Guide."

In addition, when applying a service release to a 2003.06.00 Rational Suite release, you may receive one or more "Source File Not Found" warnings about files in the ...\Classics\Projects\... folder. These warnings can safely be ignored, as they are only used by the ProjectConsole Web server components when accessing the ProjectConsole sample site.

For more information, read the IBM Rational Installation Guides for Server and Desktop Products.

Install RATLC00454398/ No APAR When upgrading from a previous 2003 version of an IBM Rational product using the 2003.06.13 CDs, the following message may continue to display with Disk 1 in the CD drive:
"Please insert the disk: Disk 1"

This happens when the original installation was performed using a designated release area created through the "Enterprise Deployment" install option, or for a product that was downloaded from the Web.

To work around this error, read the technical note. Go to http://www.ibm.com/software/rational/support/ and search for the text "upgrade insert disk 1," or tech note 1165296.

Rose RealTime RATLC00517283/ No APAR Upgrading from Rose RealTime 2003.06.00

If you are installing Rose RealTime v2003.06.12 or greater as an upgrade to an existing installation of Rose RealTime 2003.06.00, the Rose RealTime TargetRTS files may not update (install) correctly. In order to avoid unpredictable results, uninstall Rose RealTime v2003.06.00 before installing Rose RealTime v2003.06.12 or greater. This is a known issue.
